This ended up on the cutting room floor for the upcoming album release, “Hindsight,” but it felt like it had to be shared, given the times. I’m sending this out to everybody, with a dedication to white folks. I’m talking to you: allies and otherwise. That’s the breakdown. I grew up with allies before the phrase was being passed around. When I grew up, my neighborhood in the Northeast Bronx provided a front row seat to white flight. However, a handful of families stayed and just remained part of the community: just neighbors. They did what neighbors do. We hung out together, helped each other and lived together. Now there’s new ways to look at the most basic shit. One of the white neighbors may have not called it privilege, but he was quick to try to hook up the rest of us with a job when he got in the door. My white neighbor might not call himself an ally, but he was quick to tell the cops that we were all just playing and go find a real problem. Mind you, this was a very small sample size, but they were part of our community. These days, we have a more informed understanding of how important these types of actions are. There are far too many people that don’t understand this concept of neighborhood: so many that need a good talking to.
