Using the original interview recording as the soundtrack, director Josh Raskin has woven a visual narrative which tenderly romances Lennon’s every word in a cascading flood of multipronged animation. Raskin marries the terrifyingly genius pen work of James Braithwaite with masterful digital illustration by Alex Kurina, resulting in a spell-binding vessel for Lennon’s boundless wit, and timeless message.

Crazy Like A Foxxx album preview

Fourteen years overdue, Freddie Foxxx, aka Bumpy Knuckles, is finally ready to step back into the spotlight with the official release of his 1994 demo tape, Crazy Like A Foxxx, as a two CD set on July 29th via Brooklyn-based record label Fat Beats. The album is a veritable time capsule from the early 1990’s, with guest spots from legends such as 2Pac, Chuck D, and Kool G Rap.

The original Crazy Like A Foxxx album was recorded in New York and intended for an official release by MCA. However, for reasons unknown, the album was shelved after promotional cassettes were serviced to radio and press. This newly remastered release includes both the 1993 demo version on Disc 2 and the 1994 completed version of the album on Disc 1. Largely written for the emcee’s friends in prison, the album has ominous overtones and provides insight into Bumpy’s dark state of mind at that time period. The previously unheard demo album (Disc 2) features production exclusively from D.I.T.C.’s Showbiz, Lord Finesse, and Buckwild.

In the late ‘90’s, Bumpy resurfaced with critically acclaimed appearances on D.I.T.C. member O.C.’s classic album Jewelz and Gang Starr’s Moment of Truth. He went on to release one of the best selling independent albums of 2000 with Industry Shakedown, which moved over 200,000 units. In 2002 Bumpy followed up with the critically praised Konexion. After several more high-profile appearances and more than a little bit of commotion on the internet about a long-standing beef with Rakim (which was recently settled), Bumpy is ready to finally release these much talked-about tracks from his early days in the music business and remains a force to be reckoned with. The track listing of the double CD set Crazy Like A Foxxx is as follows:

DISC 1: JAILHOUSE VERSION
1. Can’t Break Away
Most of the music we made on a PC with a creative live soundblaster so we had no conditions for live recording, but we are trying to make it in a box live as we can! Recently we have bought better pc and a better sound card.

Who does what in the group? How do you work together when putting together songs.
It depends from song to song, there is no strict rules. One of us brings some melody or riff ,and we work together on developing and producing it to song.

Someone you look up to, dead or alive.
Luka: For me it is Bob Marley because his music and thinking gave me strength and fate to work and live many times I was down,he is my ideal because he was not just a complete musician but complete concius man thinking and speaking of the world that we live in, speaking and struggling for his people.
Gile: Chuck Berry, Nelson Mandela, I admire his strength and endurance in fighting for the right cause.

Someone you look down on.
Luka: All the guys in the music who forgot where they are comin’ from after getting few bucks and some jewels from the industry, and decadent musicians selling illusionary and greedy views on life to the youth…the list is long. I live in a poor country, it is really perverted to watch them on tv, poisoning the mind of my people.
Gile: Marylin Manson, because he is misguiding the youth, promoting bad spiritual and life attitude.

Other than music, what’s worth living for?
Luka: There are many things…friends, ladies,Wing Chun Kung fu, dancing, Big Splffs…
Gile: Big Spliffs

You fasted all day, what are you dieing to eat?
We are both vegeterians!
Luka:Soya steaks and tomato salad
Gile: Fried cheese and fries

You’re at a party, what’s your drink?
Luka: Beer
Gile: Beer!

Name a song you can’t stand.
Luka: Madonna-Hung up,Anything from Madonna she makes me throw up…
Gile:Guns and roses-Live and let die (cover)

You’re going to be deaf by morning, what do you ask to listen to?
Luka: Bob Marley, Wes Motgomery, Gregory Isaacs, Roots Radics Band, King tubby, Black Uhuru, Jimmi Hendrix, Abyssinians,Wu tang Clan, Johnny Clarke..
Gile: By songs:Black star ft. Common-respiration,Wu tang clan-cream,Cypress Hill-Boom biddy bye bye,Mos Def and Scritti politti-Tinseltown to boogiedown,Massive attack-Sly

Life after death? Yes/No
Luka: There is…
Gile: I think there is, but many think opposite, so maybe…

How do you hope to be remembered?
Luka:Like a good musician,friend and husband!
Gile:Like a good sound producer

How do you hope you are not remembered?
Luka: I don’t know…by letting down people I care for
Gile: For nasty street Fights…

Free verse, anything else on your mind?
Luka: I am that I am - Peter Tosh
Gile: I fight in a holy war with my menthal - Shabbazz the Disciple

Bless,

Luka & Gile

While most of these artists never viewed music as a path to fame and riches, Thompson maintains that it’s hard not to subconsciously internalize those commerical pressures. “I live with that,” he say. “When I create things, I almost have to dumb it down a little, because low record sales for me is seen like a failure…Black product is only celebrated when the artists’ image is overbloated, overanimated, and there’s sales to back it up.” This isn’t necessarily clear-cut racism, he says, but rather something the black community bears some responsibility for fostering. “The new minstrel movement in hip-hop doesn’t allow the audience to believe the artist is smart,” he continues. “I love Kid A, but I don’t think D’Angelo would be allowed to sing ‘Cut the kids in half’ over and over and be taken seriously. It’d be like, ‘What’s wrong with that boy?”

Another tape rip from July 1996, recorded from Hot 97 and Angie Martinez’s 6 - 10pm show featuring freestyles by Smoothe Da Hustler, Trigga, 12 O’Clock (Brooklyn Zu, Wu-Tang), and Foxy Brown, who were all on the Nutty Professor soundtrack. Trigga rips it and Angie could probably take some credit for Trigga getting signed to Def Jam at the time since I remember Angie Martinez shouting him out as one of the better unsigned rappers out a few times. On some mid 90s pause tape goodness, I also recorded a quick Jay-Z freestyle over De La’s “The Bizness” right after this from that same week (or what it the same day? I can’t remember) when he came up to the station for the first time, I can remember, promoting the “Reasonable Doubt” album. I was going to break this up into two but I thought some people might enjoy this is as is, because who doesn’t like a good pause mix tape?
