guru 8.0

Hopefully listening to this will prompt another rant from gimantalon over @ Dj Premier Blog, his first one about the questionable superproducer status of Solar was pretty funny. Not to mention pointing out the awkward vibe that seems to be present when a frequently-together Guru and Solar get interviewed. I guess there isn’t really anything wrong with rocking similar misshapen hats all the time though, or is there?

    meh.

  2. [...] regardless of my disappointment with the more recent work from this rap stalwart, the appearance of The 8.0 Lost And Found EP over at Grand Good yesterday made me a bit curious. This work sports five different songs coming [...]

  3. fatherallah on Apr 8, 2009

ya right brightest in ny. i can think of ten before solar. these guys must be gay lovers or something that they only work together and not on nobody elses material!!!

  4. people on Apr 15, 2009

so there’s something wrong with wearing hats now?this trite article of yours, completely devoid of any substance or intelligent discourse that it is,just really shouldn’t be inflicted on the reading public.we deserve better.you make no mention of the music itself on the ep,you obviously haven’t listened to it.instead we have some hackneyed reference to hats as the cornerstone of your “piece”…pretty weak… fatherallah, maybe you have some preoccupation with the subject you bring up,maybe some therapy would help-peace…oh and dj sea, can you get up off of your ass the next time you write a comment? thanks-peace

  5. G on Apr 15, 2009

    hackneyed is a great word

i give no mention of the music cause i was trying to avoid saying that it sucks, out of respect for guru. i’m a big fan of his. good thing these crappy beats won’t change that.

nothing morally wrong with misshapen hats, but they’re funny to look at

  6. people on Apr 18, 2009

g, i doubt you listened ’cause “it sucks” still doesn’t qualify as intelligent discourse.like how so?i

    dare you to be articulate-peace

  7. G on Apr 18, 2009

if you’re looking for review u might want to try the comments section @ nahright

  8. Boombap on Apr 27, 2009

What the hell is this crap they calling hip hop? This is not hip hop!
This is RAP music. Guru rhyming over “Disco” tracks now? And Solar, you have not invented nothing new, you will never be respected in the hip hop arena, maybe in Europe but not here in the States. Solar will ruin Guru’s legacy by producing these South tracks and Disco music from this wack ass EP. Both of u are lost!

  9. people on May 3, 2009

open your mind.what are you dismissing all of disco now?Guru and Solar are in charge of what hip hop is.not you silly.they have more knowledge of what hip hop is in each of their respective pinkies than you have in your whole body. no,you’re lost. they’re found…so why would europe give respect and not the states?.what are you trying to say there?are you dissing europe or the states?take your foot out your mouth-peace

  10. CV on May 4, 2009

Sorry people, I took the time to listen to this EP but this not a good recording.

  11. people on May 4, 2009

another half assed vague response from cv. can’t say why, can’t say anything;can’t be taken

seriously.like which songs did you listen to?do you know what they are called?what don’t you

like about them?when someone says it’s “wack”with no explanation of why, they and their true

motives are called into question ….why are you apologizing?did you do something wrong?

are you trying to pull the wool over people’s eyes?why?did you really listen to the music?take

    a look at yourself…-peace

  12. people on May 4, 2009

oh and “g”,if this isn’t a so called “review” then what is it?looks like a suspect pot shot to

me.and if you like the word “hackneyed”,you might like this one:”chicanery”.to me that sums

up your mo in one word.yes i’m looking for an intelligent review.”the comments section

    @nahright”?what is that?a “reviewer” referring me to some vague”link”.is that a link?gee a

writer telling me he’s not really here to give a review.what kind of glass house are you living

in?i’m throwing a stone through it!what are you here to do?peace- thanks for printing this

though.at least free speech isn’t dead here like it is on some other sites….

  13. people on May 4, 2009

oh if you mean the comments on the right, i read those….those aren’t comprehensive reviews though…peace

  15. blacksheeep on May 5, 2009

people. People. PEOPLE! skip the bs dude. if you knew how hard guru can rock a mic, rock a crowd and kill a beat, you would not waste your time droppin pseudo-literate shit like you do rite now. dat ep is probably one of the weakest releases from a cat as long in the game as guru is- dunno bout solar – but this sucks lightyears man. be honest people. you actually manage to listen to this crap more than once? i cant. shit hurts my ears. after playin it once i had to recompense with payin all gangstarr albums in a row so my ears could recover from the whackness. this is lirically poor and musically played out e.g dat autotune on fastlane just tops everything. after everybody and they moms autotuned their shit, why would anyone with a rep like guru come and try to fuck around with autotune? let alone ignore the fact that it just S U C KS?…dunno peeps but this collection of crap just is not worth bein reviewed. honestly. and i aint even gettin into gurus “i am gangstarr” bs. oooh snap!

  16. blacksheeep on May 5, 2009

..actually they should have kept those tracks lost and bitchslap the cat who found em.

  17. CV on May 5, 2009

saying this isnt a good recording isnt vague. not sure why you would even want to hear my deeper, inner feelings about this random release. if you like it, bump it though. i wont judge

  18. people on May 16, 2009

uhh black sheep you actually haven’t addressed anything i said or denied any of it.go track by

track scaredy cat.and cv yes that is vague, track by track of not just the ep but the album and

be articulate, come on you can do it when the time comes.and one other thing Guru is

Gangstarr and so is Dj Premier if he wants to be, Guru never said anything otherwise, but

apparently they are not working together right now.Guru says it’s still a part of him and what

he does. is that ok with you.i’m terribly sorry if it isn’t -peace

  19. peopleissolar on May 19, 2009

People is Solar. His punk ass is so insecure he rants on these boards to feel better about himself. I’m amazed he has that much time with all the dik suckin he’s got to do to keep Guru spitting over those wacked out beats.

  20. people on May 20, 2009

no i’m not solar.but you seem to be preoccupied with “dik suckin”.it must be on your mind a

lot. i recommend therapy.and none of you cats have addressed anything i wrote. you

can’t,because you don’t know how.this is a great record.you all are full of it.you know it too-

    peace

  21. CV on May 21, 2009

ok, I’ve never written a review before but here goes.

Divine Rule – Disco-type beat thumpin, but not my steez as for as what i like in rap production and the chorus isn’t catchy. Guru’s content is actually kinda nice but I wouldnt wanna hear anyone rap over this beat. I’d re-record this rhyme over a better beat if I was Guru

Fastlane – Horrible chorus, and its not because of the use of autotune (which I just found out was invented by some oil dude who used it to measure vibrations underground to find oil more precicely) / talk box. Beat sounds generic, something that would be 2-tracked for a Papoose f song that would never get an official release. Still, Guru is a veteran who should be smashing up a beat like this but shit actually drowns him out, which is ok since he says something aboutn his swagger coming across /boss / cost / lost

Ride – Again, its not the autotune use that makes this wack but everyone else might disagree. The beat isnt terrible here, drums are actually solid but something unlistenable about this whole song that i cant put my finger on. maybe its because there too much chorus and not enough guru rhyming

After Time – Beat kinda boring, and I’m not digging the way the vocals are sounding, from a technical standpoint. Solar raps on this song and its actually the best verse on the album so far. I hate the chorus on this song.

No GImmick – beat is wack, chorus terrible. I’m a big fan of Doo Wop rapping but I probably never want to hear this again

Not sure why instrumentals were included.

  22. people on May 23, 2009

well that’s a start cv.but the rest of the album is out now so you’re gonna have to review that too.and the fact that you link us to a song from nearly 20 years ago at the end shows where you are at .close minded and in the past.people who just like good music and aren’t prejudiced dig this music.and i understood those lyrics that you attempt to quote the first time i heard them.another thing, you say you have never written a review before.how many years have you been writing one line comments with no substance? -peace

  23. CV on May 24, 2009

im not stuck in 94 nor do i think Guru will always need Premier to make good music (see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnUb6HuJ-WU). This is not a good recording, I think Guru is capable of making good music still and I’ll probably keep checking for his music. Ive been a man of no substance for years so my one liners might reflect that.

  24. rt718 on Jun 12, 2009

Being the big Premo fan that i’ve always been, gotta admit i was skeptical about even giving this a sample listen but i’m glad i did because even though that Gangstarr sound is missing guess what? It doesnt even matter. Refreshing is the first word that comes to mind. I’m not trying to go track by track cuz honestly i hate typing but all i gotta say is that top to bottom this is a must have if you love good music like i do. My favorites are “Divine Rule”, “Fastlane”, “When u least expect”, “Best of my years”(any genuine fan of Guru would really appreciate this one)”& After Time”(where the producer Solar gives us 16 bars that took me back to when i first heard the wave of 5 Percenters(Rakim,Brand Nubian,Etc) in the late 80′s-early 90′s – btw what happen to that type of lyrical content). All in all a very solid release. Hey i wouldnt complain if i heard Premier & Guru were gonna release oe more album but at the same time i aint mad seeing one of my favorite mc’s of all time doing something new because like track#10 sometimes you gotta deal with the fact that “Those days are gone”.

  25. blaziin101 on Apr 22, 2010

whoever said this album sucks is a fuckin idiot! this album is raw as fuck!! all you wack faggots that hate on Guru and Solar are pathetic you dont know what real hip hop is! RIP Guru the greatest MC to ever bless the mic
