Just now my daughter was running in our backyard, as she did her best to maneuver over the uneven grass she took a bold skip-step to try to land the low elevation deck. She missed by an inch. As she fell face forward, her reflexes kicked in and her hands kept her face safe. But she still got scared. So did I. She’s only three but pain memories can supposedly get formed at all ages. She must have remembered. Just two days prior we were at Cunningham park in Queens. She was scooting with her older brother. Still establishing her limits, she saw our 5 year old roll down a winter stricken paved road and she fearlessly followed suit. Unfortunately she encountered a small twig and then a slight bump and her weight, barely enough to counter a strong gust of wind, didn’t provide enough of a center to help her regain balance. She wiped out. No helmet. So in our backyard, less than an hour ago, my heart skipped a beat, my reflex memory instantly flashing back to that day in the park. That day where she scraped her left cheek in a way that made her mom cry. And here she is again, crying over a fall. I scooped her up and tried to console her with a big hug. As I was rocking her we fell into a rhythm. This reggae mix, recorded live in 2009 @ Savalas, was playing out of the sun room. My daughter and I ended up dancing on the deck, for half an hour. Enjoying the breeze and the sunset, she fell asleep in my arms. And I don’t want to forget. Thanks BoogieKnight.
