Holdengraber, who began the evening with a plea for Def Jam to deposit its archives at the library, ended by asking whether libraries and the record industry weren’t really two institutions in the same rocky boat, imperiled by technological forces that were transforming all culture into instantly downloadable private experience.

Rubin exited with the same Zen-like calm he came in with. “The old system is crumbling; a new system will rise up,” he said. “It doesn’t get in the way of making great art. Our job is to make great art.”
