Hip-hop legend KRS-One has never been afraid to court controversy and provoke strong reactions. Now the Boogie Down Productions legend has topped himself by writing The Gospel of Hip Hop: The First Instrument, a mammoth treatise on the spirituality of hip-hop he hopes will some day become a sacred text of a new hip-hop religion.

Laugh if you must, but people laughed at Joseph Smith and L. Ron Hubbard when they set up their own religions. They’re still laughing, and pointing, and giggle-snorting so hard milk comes out their noses. Heck, they even laughed at a sandal-wearing dude with long hair and some crazy ideas about peace and love. That long-haired mystery man? The guy who screams at passerby outside the Sears by my house to stop stealing his thoughts. Like all members of America’s cultural elite, we personally worship Pan, the goat God.

Will KRS-ONE’s hip-hop religion someday replace Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Bhuddism, Hinduism and (insert other religion here)? No, but, as always, we remain cautiously optimistic.

This is serious but it is not new.

Prior to my encounter with God, I would have been all for this! A new religion based on Hip Hop philosophy – taught by the teacha KRS-ONE! I would have been ALL IN! I am glad my heart was open and I learned the truth.

For those of us that are Christians and practice Christianity in our lives through constant study and discipline (there is a difference between confessing you are a Christian and practicing applying the principles and teaching of Christ) we search the scriptures to find Lucifer wanting to be like the most high God. His statements in Isaiah 14:12-15 have been repeated by those lost time and time again. Read it, and then read the actual press release so you can read KRS-Ones words first hand. You can find the article at http://www.examiner.com/x-10853-Portland-Humanist-Examiner~y2009m8d25-Rap-religion-KRSOne-to-release-HipHop-Bible

To quote KRS from his press release: No matter what God thinks, hip hop is the new religion. He acknowledges God, yet arrogantly tells God what is and what isnt.

I commend him on his desire to change the world. Most of the Churches today have fallen short and everyday you read about a Pastor being convicted of a crime and the integrity of the Church is taking a hit.

The difference is, Christianity is NOT a religion. It is not set on a bunch of rules that causes one to rule over another. It is a way of life that causes us to love our God with all of our strength, and to love our brother and sister (regardless of their social status, color, religion, sexual preferrences) as we love ourselves. We are saved by grace (it was a gift) not by any works we do. We do the work because we are saved, not saved because of how many tracts we pass out or how many doors we knock on. That is the heart of Christianity. Love!

Unfortunately, most of us, including those who call themselves Christians haven’t search the scriptures to learn the truth.

I pray for KRS-One because he is a good man with wonderful intentions. He is just another beloved son of God who has never learned the truth
