Lil Mama Deserves To Be A Popstar 5

I’m glad a female mc that can actually rap is getting this shine. Not to be a d*ck or anything but Lil Mama as an artist is more interesting to me right now than El-P or Talib Kweli. Her production is poppy but that’s not always a bad thing.

Banksy, On Advertising 0

Banksy on advertising

Some thoughts on advertising, by Banksy. via the newly invigorated Hip-Hop Ads.

From the post:

The daily grind tends to eat away at the best of us. It’s all too easy to lose perspective; we in the world of advertising and marketing buy and sell culture on such a regular basis… that we forget that we comprise the culture.

It always makes me whince when I hear of young professionals giving up DJing or MCing because of the daily grind. If only there were more hours in a day. No one should have to drop culture (hip hop and otherwise) in order to assimilate into Corporate America.

The above quote (among other things) inspired me to start blogging again, in spite of the sometimes-ridiculous hours I put into my ad agency job. Yes, I just suggested that blogging is an art form.

Blogging requires inspiration, dedication, and it’s all about self-expression. So why not?

Keep grinding.

That’s How It Is, You Can Ask Giz 0

Allhiphop.com interviews the great Milk Dee. Link

AllHipHop: The original “Top Billin’” how did it come together?

Milk Dee: I was actually working on a remix for one of Lyte’s songs, “Take It Light,” and I was just down there and I made the beat and I was putting her vocals to it. But then I got inspired to write something. I wrote and spit it and just recorded it and the next day I let Daddy-O and Giz hear it and they kind of let me know the heat, they was like “Yo, this is it right there.” I didn’t realize it. That’s basically how it came about. I was just playing around one night and did it, and Daddy-O and Giz let me know what it was.

AllHipHop: What equipment did you use to make “Top Billin’” and what are you using now?

Milk Dee: When I did “Top Billin’” I used a Boss foot pedal sampler. It only samples two seconds, you can’t save it, they use it a lot with guitars and whatever. I had one of those and I triggered the sample with a Roland-707 drum machine. I recorded it on Tascam 248 4-track. Now, I got everything [laughing]. I got two studios [in Staten Island] full of equipment. The main thing that I use is a MPC2500 and Logic.

EPMD and Nas in NYC

Might have to sell my ticket for the Smif-N-Wessun and Sadat X show and go to this instead. I’m a huge EPMD fan. The last time I saw them perform was at the reunion show in BB Kings. Ya can’t imagine how hyped everyone was for that. Maybe LL Cool J will come out this time and do his verse for Rampage. (Thanks Howard!) buy tickets

Interview With Mixtape King G-Bo the Pro [video] 5

Bronxrap.com recently got a chance to interview Mixtape pioneer G-Bo the Pro. The thing I remember most about Double R and G-Bo the Pro tapes, besides the crazy blends, was the superior sound quality versus other mix tapes out. Their tapes were pretty crystal clear and always made for great sounding dubs and 3rd generation copies. This era of early 90s mixtape djs, like Double R and G-Bo, Ron G, Craig G, S&S, etc. never gets the credit it deserves as far as influence during the time. Barely anything written or covered on hip hop from like 1990 to 1995 even mentions the influence of mixtape djs. For the most part, people blastin music out their cars weren’t tuned into Stretch and Bob or Funkmaster Flex or whoever when they came around the block, they had Double R tapes! Kid Capri gets some recognition mostly for rockin clubs but while everyone loves early 90s hip hop, they forget that mixtape Djs played a critical role in the development of both the business and the music itself. Beat jugglin, crate diggin, crab scratching, competition winning, radio show hosting DJs get all the early 90s glory but the mixtape DJs had the power.
