Peace to Peter Agoston

Here is the full version of the original Culturama 4 “Fakeality”.

I produced this circa 2002.

All music videos were provided to me with permission from the video director, artists and/or their record labels. Mostly through the directors and the artists themselves though. I’d obtain individual videos on any then available format, which ranged from 3/4″ Tape, Beta Tape, MiniDV Tape, VHS Tape. Everything was manually transferred, sequenced and edited on Final Cut or Avid (I don’t remember) outside of Portland, Oregon. I also all of the documentary style footage in between videos.

Most of you may not actually be familiar with Culturama tapes, as Volumes 1-5 were all self-produced in extremely small quantities (Volume 6 and 7 were done in collaboration with another company and had a seemingly broader distribution).

There was probably 100 VHS tapes and 25-50 DVD-r’s of “Culturama 4” made. I know that I “pressed up” the VHS first and then the smaller run of DVD-r’s later on.
At the time of release, this was the lengthiest Culturama to date. Since I was living in California at the time, I mostly sold direct to some record & skate shops all along the West Coast, otherwise small batches were available online at Sandbox Automatic, Vinyl Exchange, ATAK, UGSMag and Access Hip-Hop as well as direct mail-order. Also, by living on the West Coast, you can see the content was definitely influenced by my surroundings.

This has never been available for viewing online to my knowledge, It’s never streamed or been
available for download or purchase for well over 10 years, almost 15. Although like like other Culturama tapes several individual music videos have been lifted off of the original VHS or DVD-R’s and posted elsewhere. This particular version was transferred off of a VHS master, as the original mini-DV is lost.

Hope you enjoy! I really loved making these. It’s a fun trip to watch them now too, to see how
inventive a lot of the directors and artists were and what a cool community this was. You have
to remember this was pre-youtube, post-MTV. So usually the only way you could see these kinds of indie/DIY rap videos were on Cable Access TV shows! Honestly. Sounds very weird and unbelievable, but it’s pretty true.

In the near future, I plan to upload more and better mastered-versions I do hope.
