Had the chance to see Edan perform in Brooklyn last week and, as usual, always a great live show. He even busted out this audio device that creates different sounds based on the proximity of your hand. I’ve seen him use it at previous shows. Too difficult to explain. Peep the video for “Rock and Roll” below to see what I mean. Peace to Peter Agoston and Chairman Mao in the building. Be sure to watch the videos at 1080p for maximum grandgoodness.

The device he uses is called a theremin. It’s named after it’s inventor, a Russian professor named Leon Theremin who invented it in the late 1920s after he was working with some radio gear and noticed that the sounds would change depending on how he moved his hands. He isolated and understood the effect (which is cause by variable capacitance between your hands and the controls) and made an instrument out of it.

Usually, the theremin is controlled using two hands, one hand controls pitch and the other one volume. In this case, he’s using the pitch control hand, but the volume is constant and he’s instead using the cross-fader to change the volume. This probably means that he’s using a pitch-only theremin, possibly one built from a kit.

If you want to read more about theremins generally, the wikipedia page is a good jumping off point.
