I WANT TO SEND OUT THE UTMOST RESPECT AND CONDOLENCES TO THE MEMORY OF JOHN RIVAS—-aka MR. MAGIC
HE PASSED AWAY THIS MORNING OF A HEART ATTACK…..
TRUE HIP HOP HEADS KNOW THAT HIS HISTORY IS SO LONG DUE TO HIM BEING THE FIRST RAP MIXSHOW TO EVER BE ON COMMERCIAL RADIO ON NEW YORK’S WBLS–(107.5) WITH MARLEY MARL AND FLY TY IN 1982-1984…….THEN WENT ON TO WHBI IN OCTOBER OF 1984 AND THEN BACK TO WBLS in 1985 and WDAS in Philly SIMULTANEOUSLY
HE PAVED THE WAY FOR ALL RADIO STATIONS THAT EVER DID MIXSHOWS AND ALSO SPARKED THE CAREER OF BOOGIE DOWN PRODUCTIONS DUE TO THE DISS HE SHOWED WHEN THEY CAME TO SHOP THEIR DEMO TO HIM AND WAS TURNED AWAY WHICH THEN SPARKED “SOUTH BRONX” AND “THE BRIDGE IS OVER”…….
HE WAS KNOWN FOR HIS DIRECT AND SARCASTIC ATTITUDE ON THE AIR AND EVERY ARTIST WANTED HIS APPROVAL WHEN IT CAME TO BREAKING NEW RECORDS……..HE EVEN HAD SONGS DEDICATED TO HIM BY THE LEGENDARY WHODINI–(”MR. MAGIC’S WAND”) WHICH WAS SURPRISINGLY PRODUCED BY ONE OF MY FAVORITE ARTISTS THOMAS DOLBY…….
SHOUTS OUT TO MARLEY MARL AND FLY TY FOR THE CORRECT INFORMATION ON THIS……
REST IN PEACE MR. MAGIC………….DJ PREMIER

The first “mixtape” I got was with Mar-ley Marl and Sir Juice from BLS. A cat came to the base I was living in Germany and dubs were abundant. Soon every kid that wanted to fit in was mocking the cadence and speech patterns of Mr. Magic. I followed the cutting styles of Marlon Williams. Needless to say, The Rap Attack Show was influential beyond the US boundaries from “a worlllld premier” to hearing actual interviews of artists we hadn’t even seen yet. Mind you, Tiger Beat and Word Up covered major acts and there was no internet. The only way to inform yourself was liner notes on LPs and every one of them gave thanks to Mr. Magic. Put me on that list. I wish I couldve said it in person.
[...] DJ Mr. Magic has apparently passed away from a heart attack. Magic was winding down his run as NY hip-hop’s kingmaker by the time I got up on things in the late ’80s, but his “Rap Attack” show with [...]
Wow one of the Masters of Hip Hop has passed, unreal… I remember Beating up KRS-1 and RED Alert with great impact during the RADIO Wars and the Bridge Wars stemming from that whole rivalry 107.5 WBLS RAPP ATTACK VS 98.7 KISS Red Alert Show… ‘’of course that always a now brainer MR MAGIC RAPP ATTACK ALWAYS WON NO COMPETITION AS RED ALERT SUCKS THEN AND NOW … My Responses served both MARLEY MARL & MR MAGIC and was my Honor to do so at the time… If it wasn’t for him there would not be Hip-Hop as you know it today and yesterday despite its many incarnations.
My condolences to the Family of John Rivas A/K/A Mr. Magic Real Hip hop legend

The world has certainly lost the greatest Dee-Jay in the passing of Mr. Magic. As a friend of his sister growing up in Bushwick Mr. Magic known to us as “Lucky” was one of the ones who made great things out of coming from the hood. He was an Icon to the community and someone we could brag abput as he belonged to us!!! He was an inspiration as he showed that we could leave and move on to bigger things in life and that our dreams could become our realities. Thanks “Lucky” for giving us the ability to dream, and the belief again in MAGIC……
MY CONDOLENCES TO THE LEGENDARY MR. MAGIC. HE PAVED THE WAY FOR HIP HOP LEGENDS THEN AND NOW. HE WAS THE FORMOST MENTIONABLE BROTHER THAT EVER GOT PROPS FROM ANYONE WORLD WIDE. THE IS AND WAS THE GREATEST HIP HOP PHILOSOPHER OF OUR GENERATION. RIP MR.MAGIC. YOUR WORDS WILL LIVE FOEVER IN HIP HOP HISTORY.
