Def Jux Still Believes In Vinyl, Del Tha Funkee Homosapien’s First Single “Workin’ It” Now Available On 12inch 1

Workin It 12inch

New Del 12inch for Workin’ It now available. B-side features a second track called Foot Down plus a Blockhead remix. Of course this has already been ripped and posted online. But I won’t tell you where. As a matter of fact, I’m starting to reach my tipping point with these sissy mp3 blogs that blatantly bootleg tons of material and think it’s cool because they put a disclaimer on the sidebar that includes some sort of “promotional only” bullsh*t. Big difference between throwing up a single every now and then and just straight up jacking entire releases. But who am I to judge. Ultimately this is what brought the big labels to their knees so I do see the contribution these sheisters have made. But it just gets a bit under my skin when they run rampant with indie releases. They end up suffering the most. I guess what doesn’t kill ya, right?

GP Wu Takes It A Step Further And Confronts Most Of The Wu-Tang Clan 1

rubbabandz

Although this might have been out prior to Shyheim’s joint. You might be familiar with Rubbabandz from the GP Wu album. Will the Wu-Tang Clan stay quiet? Even if he is doing this just to get attention, the fans demand more.

Open Source Crate Digger Mike Van Olden Interviewed 3

Drum Crazy (Vol. 1)

This is the dude behind the Drum Crazy series put out by Ubiquity. His compilations must have helped countless producers skip their vegetables. He’s all about sharing. Two cats that took advantage? Prince Paul and Dan the Automator

Read Dirty Waters: Mike Van Olden Interview

DW: How did you link up with Automator and Prince Paul and how was it working with them?

MVO: I worked with Dan for over 8 years and I can say that he was a wonderful mentor to me. Not only for music, but for life also. He taught me a great deal. He’s one of my very best friends and one of the few people in the world that have similar interests to my own. A rare soul.

Nakamura and I first met at Ubiquity. I think the Drum Crazy series impressed him and we became friends. I sat in on many of his productions: DJ Shadow’s Entroducing, Dr. Octagon, Deltron 3030, Lovage, Handsome Boy, etc. I got to live my ‘producer dreams’ through him.

It’s not easy to be a full-time music producer. As a matter of fact, it’s 95% bullshit and 5% productivity. It takes a strong person to make a career out of it. It’s like having to find a new job every 3 months. Constant renewal.

I’ll share a couple of Automator’isms with you: Once, Dan simply explained to me that ‘people who really want to do music just do it’. This may seem simple at first, but if you think about it, it’s really profound.

He also told me this true story that happened to him: Dan was having dinner with Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto at a nice Japanese restaurant in NYC. While having dinner, Morimoto was approached by many of the staff who asked for his autograph and/or a picture with him. Morimoto noticed that there was one guy in the kitchen who looked bothered and never did approach him to get his autograph. Morimoto turned to Dan and pointed out that ‘that man is a REAL chef’ because he was too proud to come over and get an autograph like everyone else.

Overall, I have to say that Dan guided me into adulthood and I really appreciate his help. Through him, I was able to see the music industry from every angle, without having to put my own career on the line.

I met Paul through Nakamura. As you may know, they produced a couple of Handsome Boy Modeling School records together. Dan brought Paul over to my house to raid my record collection for some new breaks for the album. I ended up giving them a big stack. I’m not really sure what they used.

More On Bad Biology, R.A. The Rugged Man And Frank Henenlotter’s Horror Movie 1

Bad Biology

No trailer yet but that poster is kind of bugged. The movie is currently in post production and slowly gaining attention from B-movie fans. Shot in 35mm and featuring cameos from a slew of indie artists including Prince Paul, J-Zone, R.A., Vinnie Paz (who is apparently helping to finance the project), Reef the Lost Cauze and Remedy. And that doesn’t include the artists contributing to the soundtrack. Prince Paul seems to be in charge of the music and other contributors will include Kool G. Rap, Smoothe Da Hustler, Killah Priest, 60 Sec Assassin, Jedi Mind Tricks, Ras Kass, Havoc, Tech N9ne, Shabazz The Disciple and even Atmosphere. Visit them at mysp*ce.com/badbiology

NY Cool Kids Unreceptive To Cool Kids, Even After They Compare Themselves To Beastie Boys 0

According to New York Magazine. What’s all the hype about anyway?

Indie hip-hop duo the Cool Kids doesn’t have an album out, but they’ve got a few songs on MySpace, a video blowing up YouTube, and enough hype to launch the tour that brought them to Studio B last night. The cool kids in the audience, though, were nonplussed. Understandably — Chuck and Mikey’s vocals were largely undecipherable, and the beats they brought much darker and less varied than what you’ll hear online. By show’s end, the crowd had thinned considerably. They missed the best part: The Kids wrapped things up with “One, Two,” declaring themselves “the new black version of the Beastie Boys” over the backdrop of the Beastie track “Root Down.” We have to wonder — who will declare themselves the new white version of the Cool Kids?
