Here’s a pic from the video shoot for Sage Francis’ single Got Up This Morning. Video is directed by Stoney Sharp and I believe the track is produced by Buck65. Don’t think it’s finished yet but looks like it could be interesting. Link
A secret society meeting? Nope, just a veritable who’s who of underground rap stars at the music video shoot for Sage Francis. Pictured from left: guest artists Divinci and Buck 65, video director Stoney Sharp, Sage Francis and guests Slug (of Atmosphere) and Brother Ali.

Seems like they’re still finalizing the lineup but they’ve already confirmed that the festival is being extended to 5 days this year. Link
This year the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival’s programming has been expanded to a five day celebration. Here is a brief rundown of what to expect during this year’s festivities:
When: Thursday, June 7th
What: BHF Kickoff Party celebrating 50 years of Stax Records!
Join us for a night of funky soul all night long at the powerHouse Arena in Dumbo, BK. Stax Records was home to legendary acts such as Otis Redding, Booker T. and the MGs, The Bar-Kays, Isaac Hayes, The Dramatics, The Staple Singers, The Emotions and so many more. Celebrate 50 years of Soul magic, as well as the re-launch of the label. When: Thursday, June 14th
What: Hip Hop around the globe, featuring photography from David Alan Harvey at the powerHouse Arena
Hip hop, which first began on the streets of the South Bronx in the early 1970s, has traveled the globe, finding a home in every corner of the planet. Hip Hop’s versatility speaks to its accessibility and universality. In 2005, Magnum Photographer David Alan Harvey began photographing local emcees in the Bronx River Projects, home of hip hop pioneer Afrika Bambaataa, whose legendary Zulu Nation parties inspired a new generation of b-boys and -girls. It is their descendants that Harvey has captured in here—from Boogie Down thugs and Hollywood celebs to the local cultures of Spain, France, Gambia, Senegal, South Korea, and Thailand—revealing how hip hop has always spoken to the guy on the corner and the girl at the club, because skills and style comes from love. When: Thursday, June 21st
What: BHF Under The Stars
Celebrate the longest night of the year with the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival. This event is held in conjunction with Make Music New York, a city-wide music festival presenting free music from around the globe. More info can be found at www.makemusicny.org.When: Friday, June 22nd What: Wild Style:The Sampler book release celebration and screening. In 1982, a small independent movie written, produced, and directed by Charlie Ahearn was released, first in Germany, Japan, and Cannes, then finally in Times Square. Wild Style, the first film to unite the underground urban art forms of nascent hip-hop culture—DJing, MCing, b-boying, and graff writing— was filmed on location in the South Bronx without permits or pretensions. Some twenty-five years after its release, Wild Style is truly a classic, having inspired countless artists, musicians, and writers with its unforgettable scenes starring the era’s most memorable personalities. We’re celebrating in conjunction with the powerHouse retrospective book Wild Style The Sampler to be released.
When: Saturday, June 23rd
What: Performance Day
The big day. Everyone who has been there before remembers Big Daddy Kane tearing it down in ’06 or Little Brother rocking their 1st Brooklyn performance. Well, here we go again. Join us for a day of performances and festivities under the sun. Consequence is just the tip of the iceberg.

Stream Not Too Many People by Toca
Despite the confusion behind how this album is getting pushed, the beauty of the music speaks for itself. Not Too Many People seems to be track 4 off the final track listing. Available for stream on tocatheband.com. Best place for factual news and updates is blog.myspace.com/ceschiramos
Anyhow…I’m back in CT for a while and leave for California next month for a series of Toca shows. Toca supposedly comes out in late May. I’ve heard that there were some copies given out at South By Southwest - unfortunately these promos have a bullshit “bio” written on them stating that Toca was “formed and orchestrated by Xololanxinxo as he travelled the world searching for Latino musicians” - this is absolute trash…and it’s embarassing for all of us…we are not a Latin Boy band…and Xinxo did not form Toca…Toca was basically all members of Anonymous Inc. with Xinxo, Tommy V, and Danny Levin added to the project….anything else you read is a lie and please ignore it.

Unedited interview with El-P talking about his new album I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead, which is rocking my world right now. Link
What’s changed since Fantastic Damage, and does the new record reflect any progress or change?
The new one is just a different time, different era, and different person. There’s a difference in the approach, the production and songwriting. But it’s obviously the same dude. I think it’s more of a snapshot in time that shows the development of someone’s mind and experiences five years later. I hope that growth is illustrated in this record compared to Fan Damage.Let’s talk about your production, which I love by the way. What equipment did you use to make the majority of the new album, and what do you try to get out of your production? Is it anything specific?
The main workhorse is still my EPS16. That’s what I mainly use. But there’s really a lot to name. I’m a tech-head, you know? I spend most of my money investing and buying this hodgepodge of bullshit equipment [laughs]. But I mean, I have modern synths, Moogs, all kinds of stuff. Having a lot of equipment allows me to use certain pieces here and there, and not rely on one beat machine or keyboard or something. So is your EPS16 the most important piece of equipment you have?
I’ll always use my EPS, but I think the most important thing in my production isn’t one piece of equipment—it’s my approach. I try to have a lot of stuff so that I don’t overuse one thing and have that attached to my sound. You know how you can tell when you buy someone’s album that you liked before, and their new shit uses the same keyboard over and over and over? It’s like, oh okay; this motherfucker just bought a Triton! I mean, I have a Triton and all, but I don’t want my records to sound like I only used a Triton. I have a lot of shit man. That’s my love right there.Your production has always been real original. Is your sound purposeful or did it sort of develop?
It’s developed naturally through the years. That’s why when I’m not working on my own album, I’m doing different things like jazz projects and film scores and shit. I take little bits of those experiences and I take those little things and try to apply them into the way I produce. That’s just how I do it. I want to develop. I’m a fiend for development. I want to see what else I can do, what I can add to my shit. I’ve never been the type of person who thinks there’s only one correct way to do something and just stick strictly to that. I know a lot of people who have that mindset. Like they can look back at one particular year and say that’s when they found their sound or style. That’s cool. But for me, I don’t think on those ways. For me, my era of development started early and I want to grow constantly.

Besides making an @ss out of himself on VH1, the channel specializing in shows that MTV rejects, Paradise Gray of X-Clan seems to think the white rapper also made an @ss out of himself on Hot97 recently. I didn’t catch the interview with Flex (is this it?), but is Serch generally funny? He did used to dance funny. Anyone remember that MTV special where Serch and Everlast were fighting during a football game? That was funny. Link
“I am not insulted by Serch’s personal references to me, I am proud that I was able to grow from a 22 year old Hip-hop Promoter at The Latin Quarters with Jerri Curls and Hazel contact lenses (20 Years ago) into a strong Black Man, father of a College freshman with a 4.0 average and a High School senior with good grades. However, there are those from The Blackwatch Movement, The Universal Zulu Nation, One HOOD, The Hip-hop Ressurection Movement and many individuals who did not think that what Serch had to say was so funny. I know that he is an entertainer but not every Black man is running around with a Clock on his chest to know what time it is.I am very offended that Serch chose to say “Paradise, AKA Professor, Chief Bubba Professor X-Clown from the X-Clan” when Serch of all people knows well the difference between me and Professor X. March is not only the month that we lost The Notorious B.I.G. March 17th is the first Anniversary of the passing of Lumumba “Professor X” Carson. Personal reasons aside, where would you be without Professor X and I Serch? Professor X was the person who invited “Pete Nice” to The Latin Quarter (where Serch met him and formed 3rd Bass). He is the same Lumumba “Professor X” Carson who visited Tony D in Coney Island with me and arranged for MC Serch to be released from an unfair contract that he was signed to. Lumumba “Professor X” Carson was also able to see through the curls and contacts and see my true potential, he introduced me to his father Sonny Carson, with an idea that I could use Hip-hop music and culture to bring young Black people into the movement and struggle with the same promotion/media skills that I used to fill the Latin Quarters every week. I think that Serch must have gotten a little too comfortable with himself to think that making a joke of Professor X or The X-Clan would go un-checked even after all these years.”
update 032807: Got home and watched the video. Serch loves Paradise, what’s the big deal? Here’s the video. Also, here’s an early pic of Paradise Gray rockin’ a louis vutton crown beret looking thing. Nice!
