A run down of some of the recent commentary surrounding Mister Cee’s arrest last week for lewd behavior. As far as I can tell the claim first found its way online with Jacky Jasper, long time Kool Keith associate and more recently a gossip columnist specializing in Hip-Hop. Last time I ended up at his site was as I clicked through the link trail regarding Jermaine Hall’s defamation suit against an online forum. So I was not surprised over the weekend when all re-blogs led back to Jasper. What did surprise me was the first instance I came across of the rumor being confirmed, at least partially. As far as I am concerned though, even though Allhiphop might disagree, there is still no reliable source confirming the details of parties involved. This afternoon listeners of Hot 97 heard Mister Cee’s mix and as many have commented, although he did not speak, he addressed the issue through his selection of music and voiceovers. It will be interesting to see how this plays out ultimately and whether his position at the radio station or his career in general will be affected. So far I have mostly come across reactions of complete “that’s not hip-hop” outrage or “it’s all about the music” dismissal. I look forward to the non-extreme voices that, I hope, will appear and be able to hold court more practically and without vitriol or just as short-sighted idealization.
