Enter the Babylon System: Unpacking Gun Culture from Samuel Colt to 50 Cent (amazon.com product page)

First featured in the pages of Pound, Canada’s award-winning hip-hop magazine established in the summer of 1998, the Babylon System began as a single-page section combining statistics and news shorts, and has since evolved not only into one of the publication’s most popular columns, rounding out lengthy pieces on pressing affairs with interview material from various social leaders, but also into a book published by Random House Canada in January 2007, Enter the Babylon System: Unpacking gun culture from Samuel Colt to 50 Cent.

Our mission with the section has been, in part, to follow guidance harmonized by Bob Marley on a track he called “Babylon System” back in ’79: one, to “tell the children the truth,” and two, to “rebel.” That we use hip-hop to achieve those goals seems natural, given how it often does both, and how much shorties love it. In the process, we hope to pay tribute to the leadership of individuals such as KRS-One, who taught hip-hoppers to decriminalize, and demonstrate the intelligence of, the culture we love.

As an extension of the Babylon System, this site will continue to evolve, with new material—stories, interviews, images and more—added regularly. Welcome to the official website of the book. Peruse at your pleasure, fire back with your thoughts, but most of all, feel at home.
