I spent a strange hour Wednesday night at one of the many events piggybacking on SXSW: the Woodie Awards show presented by MTVu, the “college music” cable channel of MTV Networks. It was the first one presented outside of New York City, apparently–like the many other corporate brands promoting themselves at SXSW–to capitalize on the festival’s indie, do-it-yourself credibility. (Some of the festival’s badge-holders got tickets.) I was there to see an early appearance by Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All, the wild-eyed teenage hip-hop collective that’s the talk of SXSW.
