Back in the 90′s the name Grandmaster Flowers was just an urban legend. As you’ve written on your tape list Troy, Flowers died because of his addiction, he lived his last days as a panhandler. Paradise of X CLan told me this story:

“In Brooklyn, Flowers was to brothers in Brooklyn what Kool Herc was to brothers in the Bronx. Everybody loved and followed Flowers. Lumumba (Professor X – God Rest His Soul) loved Flowers!

One day we were either coming off tour or going on tour. The group was really blowing up. We were riding around midtown Manhattan, when all of a sudden Lumumba said, “Stop the car!”

All Lumumba could say was “Oh stuff…oh stuff!’

He got out and walked toward a brother with a sign in his hand. The guy was really down on his luck and was in bad shape. He bought him back to the car and introduced him to us. He said, ‘This is Grandmaster Flowers!”

Lumumba was speaking to us about the jams and how hard Flowers used to rock and then he looked at him and lunged at him. I had to hold him back. Lumumba was crying, he kept saying, ‘How could you do this to yourself? How could you do this to yourself! Don’t you know that your responsible for all of this we’re doing now!”

We cleaned Flowers up and took him on tour with us, he was our sound man.”

Yo fellas, I saw X Clan a few times back in the day, I had no idea that the dude that was setting their equipment up was the legendary Grandmaster Flowers, the man that bears the distinction of being of one of – if not THE first Black mobile disc jockey in New York City to mix (blend) records as we know it today.

How do you feel about the industry shift from Revolutionary to Gangsta?
I don’t think it shifted to the gangsta. I just think it shifted to a heavier corporate position and the corporations that decided what’s easiest to buy. Girls Gone Wild sells better than a Malcolm X book. So, there’s no question that a million motherfuckers would want to get drunk and get in front of the stage, see some titties and shit. It’s millions of motherfuckers like that, that won’t let go. It’s not too many people who want to sit down and meditate, take time and say, what the hell am I doing here? We’re not trying to say stop the party, ain’t nobody stopping no party. But if you ain’t here to focus motherfucker, you’re going to be in prison, you’re going to be out here with no job, and you going to be wandering, and when you go to the club you’re going to be broke. You got to learn how to be a man; you got to learn how to be a woman. This is basic street knowledge that you have to give to the people.

So, X-Clan Millennium Cypher, what’s that all about?
Millennium means, I can’t say it means under new management, it just means that the circle has increased and evolved. It’s the second generation of us. We have the cipher to handle millennium issues. The internet and young heads, there’s an issue. When you got old men seducing the young through this (internet) there is a problem. There is a problem with wisdom and attention deficit. You can’t say shit to the next generation about passing on science. We can’t even pass on Hip-Hop correctly. They make their own shit. The sub-cultures of Hip-Hop are killing the game. So, if I say you have to go to learn from history, Kool Herc, and then go to the jazz greats, and run all the way back to the future, they say, man, fuck that, I’m going create my own shit. I’m going to create this Trip-Hop shit, create my own weapon and separate myself from the game. That is happening everywhere, homie. Do you know how much I’m learning on these tours about little sub-cultures of Hip-Hop? The major cities have the big tours, but the small towns, they’re not accepting the culture like that. They don’t have twenty mixtapes sitting on their shelf saying, who’s the baddest emcee or not. They make the rules. You got a bunch of Lord of the Fly motherfuckers running the game in their region. So, when you got to do a show in their town and you don’t speak their language, you ain’t getting no dough, period. So, that’s why these artists are stuck in New York, or stuck in Detroit, or stuck in Atlanta and can’t get out. Why? Because that Chitlin Circuit we are suppose to be creating doesn’t exist. But for the white artists, it exists. You go on a white Hip-Hop band tour, there is a channel and circuit that is created for them wide open. And I’m telling you the truth. And I don’t have a racism problem. I’m just telling you the truth. When I tour with Damian Marley it’s 85% white people. And when I tour with Jurrasic 5 it’s 85% white people. Why? Because your label is saying black people don’t buy records and black people don’t go to concerts. So, if I advertise in your area they feel like they know better, so they’re not going buy your damn ticket anyway. That has created the separatism in Hip-Hop. That stereotype; I want to break that stereotype. You know good and well when X-Clan come to town a million black people are coming out to see us, homie.

Peace to all,

I am proud to see so many cultures reaching out to preserve conscious music. There is such a positive response not only to the coming of the new X Clan Album, but to the merging of Hip Hop subcultures. We have become so separate in the hip hop nation that we lose the definition of what good music really is. Good music serves the people, it shouldn’t destroy our faith in life; it shouldn’t divide the elder and younger generations. My mission is to serve the people with what they deserve; a positive message in a negative time. If I did this album with no music the content should still stimulate evolution in hip writers, in the coach potatoes who aspire to be American idols, etc. I’m not out to save the world in a day, getting hip hop back to a believable status of maturity is a serious task.

The new X Clan album (Return from Mecca) is the guinea pig project for a new “Golden Era” in this new Millennium. Do the supporters of that era still exist? Does the original X Clan audience even listen to Hip Hop? Will the new generation embrace the X Clan like the previous generation? These are issues that I had to address when I started this project, these are questions I had before I approached any label; as you can see by this album’s completion means I have faith in the people! The “Golden Era” of music was created by the people not the artists; the power of the people is not just a statement but a reality. It’s time to represent! Every person that complains about radio and video content, every parent that can’t share current day Hip Hop with there seeds, every artist that spits fire intelligence and can’t be heard; Step up and reclaim your ground!

Kimya Dawson sings pretty about some ugly things. Appropriate to think about on this day. GRANDGOOD slowly recuperating from hard disk failure. If anyone has our old audiocasts, send them in please. Myspace is going to start selling songs digitally soon so sign up your hiphop band. Everyone’s a hiphoper, ask Elton John. Hopefully they’ll redesign that crappy site when they add downloads. Method Man’s album was disappointing because of the beats, not his lyrics. Serengeti keeps on killin Emynd’s beats, our favorite MC season after season it seems. Lupe Fiasco blowing up, grandgood don’t know nothing about Chicago. Kill the Vultures are continuing to put out some dark moody music with hard drums. Maybe people would appreciate their sound more if their producer Anatomy released a silk screen 7inch. I can’t wait for that GRANDGOOD sh*t to drop, what’s taking so long? X Clan is putting out a new record? Wow. Amongst other things…..please go out and support your favorite artists and they will support you. Don’t just be a spectator, participation is critical.
