I recorded this a few months ago at the Rock Steady Crew anniversary show in Newark, NJ. Ice-T made a special guest appearance, talking about Zulu Nation and how West Coast hip-hop needed their stamp of approval in order to gain legitimacy. He also kicked an acapella at the end. Dope.

The Essence was a series of events organized by Project 5 (fka Zulu Nation) @ NYU. Big shout out to Mprove and Raydawn. I had no idea there was any video of the events let alone the possibility of extensive footage. Hope this project hasn’t been shelved.

This post golden era classic essentially summed up the 4 elements driven sound of the 90′s. A time be for Aesop and Vast were signed to Def Jux records…..before Tes and Signify were with Lex…. Many of the most talented b-boys and b-girls represented that night Include the likes of the Rocksteady Crew and Rock with Finesse among others. This period piece represented the begining and the end of an important shift in Hip Hop history at the turn of the millenium.

Afrika Bambaataa, the godfather of Hip-Hop and founder of the Universal Zulu Nation, has a DJ set this Saturday at Hiro Ballroom. Apparently, every Saturday, the venue has a 80s and old school hip-hop night, complete with a special guest DJ. I had a chance to check it out recently and Questlove had me going all night. The week before, Grandmaster Flash was doing the same thing. Sounds like a really dope spot, especially if you have a fetish for hot Asian chicks. Generally regarded as the Godfather of Hip-Hop, Afrika Bambaataa is the real deal. His early single ‘Planet Rock’ (1982) heralded the birth of a new era in electronic music, and is still played regularly in clubs to this day. His subsequent high-profile collaborations with people such as Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols (a.k.a. John Lydon), James Brown, Boy George and George Clinton among others helped inestimably to push the hip-hop genre forward. We could go on… but this guy has acheived so much in his life that we’ll just direct you to his wikipedia page and tell you that the guy still knows how to throw down. This is going to be a great night.

Not sure what to make of this release but it screams bootleg. And I didn’t even mention the misleading title. You don’t actually get a DVD filled with videos from these shows. Rather, you’re paying for a data disc containing mp3s of these performances. Still nice to have depending on the quality of the audio. Wonder who these cats are. Link

This collector’s set includes one data DVD containing 3.5 GB of high quality (320 Bit Rate) mp3s (26 hours of music – all 25 volumes). Each show is ID’d and sequenced, resulting in convenient use and enjoyment, as opposed to each show being one thirty to ninety minute-long continuous track. No collection is complete without the infamous Kool Moe Dee / Busy Bee scuffle, or the notorious routines of the Force MCs, Treacherous Three, and Cold Crush 4 MCs.
