We lost a great writer, journalist, debater, intellect and free thinker on December 15, 2011. Much can be said about Christopher Hitchens, good and bad, but rather than speak in his defense it’s probably best to just let the man speak for himself. No one can do it better.

This 38 minute mix is a collection of audio clips taken from Hitchens’ debates, interviews & speeches. Similar to previous Godcasts, the music is a mishmash of various genres and song clips, ranging from very familiar to totally obscure, all arranged and edited by Sage Francis.

Although sometimes I think I imagined it all and the moment captured here is a bit tame in comparison I’m pretty sure I’ve seen Sage Francis’ interactive rapping in person before. I have foggy memories of people getting thrown off stage and face slaps. But I was younger and I tended to drink so this may or may not be true.

In March I played 2 shows on the same day in Las Vegas. The first show was a pop-punk festival called The Extreme Thing. Despite how out of place I felt, this was an incredibly fun performance for me. The second show was an after party at The Palms. During the spoken word portion of my show I heard someone yelling “YOU SUCK!” from the back of the room. I was having such a good time at this show that it was easy for me to shrug off. No issue. I used this as an opportunity to channel Dude Lebowski and I said, “Well…that’s like…you’re OPINION, man.”

But the heckling persisted. Apparently, he was only at the show because he wanted to dance. “Fair enough,” I thought. Since I had a cordless microphone I made my way through the crowd during the final song and invited him to dance with me. Turns out he didn’t really want to dance. There was too much poop in his pants.

You may think it’s odd that this is one of my favorite show moments, but it’s so satisfying to confront people like this face-to-face. Real life > internet.

Sage On Russia Today a few months back discussing the interpretive nature of art and rap. Would you say these RT videos (Immortal Technique, AKIR, Sage etc) are subtle attempts to undermine conservative capitalist popular culture or is it obvious what their tone is? I find it a bit odd, who exactly is paying attention?

On Sept 1, 2008 I received a voicemail from Sean Daley (aka Slug of Atmosphere) informing me that my longtime friend, Jared Paul, was sitting in a Minnesota jail cell. This was the first day of the National Republican Convention, a 5 day event that Jared was covering for a Providence publication. I thought to myself “Well…that was quick.” And then the dark, disturbing feeling washed over me. Jared Paul is currently in a legal battle with the St. Paul, MN court system, along with hundreds of others who face trumped up charges thanks to the overzealous riot police at the Republican National Convention.

GC: Many of your fans aren’t hip-hop fans per se, thanks in part to you being featured on Punk-O-Rama Vol. 8; they just like what you do. Are you happy with that or would you prefer having actual hip-hop fans following what you do?

SF: Most of my fans used to be hardcore hip-hop fans. I stopped pandering to that crowd and decided to do stuff that was more challenging to that type of audience. What happened was I lost a segment of the hardcore hip-hop crowd and allowed other people to have access to my art and experience. I definitely like having hip-hop fans at my shows, but if I only had hip-hop fans enjoying my material I’d feel really insecure about my art. I’d wonder why people outside of my chosen genre couldn’t enjoy or identify with the humanity in what I do. Then I’d probably assume that the only reason that hip-hop kids enjoy my material (and no one else) is because I pander to them. I’ve been lucky though. I do what I want to do, and I have all walks of life coming to my shows expressing their appreciation for what I do. Black, white, Asian, Native American, Mexican, young, old, Christian, Muslim, atheist, men and women. I hold their hand and I say yes. I just say yes. They look me in the eye and they say yes as well. It’s a yes-fest.
