Directed by Syd Garon. Been waiting to see this (10 months flies by, can’t believe my son is going on 7). By the way, has everyone caught wind of the backlash the album is receiving? A 1.6 from Pitchfork, who covered N.A.S.A. prominently prior to the release. And a 35% from CokeMachineGlow, another site that takes reviews very seriously.

Boing Boing Video is proud to present the world-premiere of a new video with David Byrne from the forthcoming music documentary N.A.S.A. (Myspace Link), with art by Marcel Dzama and animation by Syd Garon. The track is “The People Tree,” and also features the musical stylings of Chali 2na, Gift Of Gab & Z-Trip. We’ve been watching this one take shape, musically and visually, for months, and I’m so excited to be blogging this today.

Mr. Byrne, who is currently on tour supporting his collaboration with Brian Eno, “Everything That Happens,” tells Boing Boing from the road:

Since I wrote a tune and some words for Mr Clean’s track various layers of meaning have been added- not the least of which is Marcel’s animated video. Having first seen his work at a show by the Royal Art Lodge collective I wondered if there might be something in the water up there in Winnipeg. Here is the voice of God speaking through an old Oak tree- which seems perfectly right…and it complements the song perfectly, as do the ghosty spermy spirits at one point. anyway, I’m flattered and thrilled that this all happened- I never would have dreamed it, but now I do

And Syd Garon, who animated and directed this beautiful gem of a video, says:

Lance Accord had an old roll of film he left out in the sun for 5 years, he shot the film for us then we aged it pretty good as per Marcel’s request. I dragged it up and down the street several times, walked all over it and then let the cat bite it for while. Then we took it to a transfer house called New Hat in Santa Monica. They have a million dollar film transfer machine that had some awesome technology that made most of the scratches disappear. Doh! So we took it back into the parking lot, drove a car over it, threw some water on it and spliced it up a bit. The transfer guy cut his million dollar color correcting finger in the process and like trooper he poured the blood on the film

With all the collabo’s on the album you might expect to see 30 people on stage, not just one dj (who I believe is Dj Squeak E. Clean).

You might recall the full music video leaked online back in May. It was promptly taken down and all we were left with were beautiful still images. Well now we have a “making of” clip from the Director’s own archives, starting with the nature footage he originally used as the basis for the final product. Syd Garon is one of the guys behind those classic DJ Q-Bert Wave Twister animations. In this instance he handled the processing of Sage Vaughn’s artwork into full motion video. From what I can gather, he has created an animated video for each song from the N.A.S.A. album, one of which we saw released earlier this week. Can’t wait for the rest. Desert Eagles – Mr. Sandman (Squeak E. Clean Remix)

Apparently the animated video for N.A.S.A’s Way Down hit the net a few months ago but was promptly taken down. The video features hand painted frames by L.A. artist Sage Vaughn. Described as “a doomed love affair between rival gangs, told entirely with birds…like an animated version of Winged Migration meets Straight Outta Compton,” I can’t wait to see this. But I guess I’ll have to settle for still images for now (more after the jump). Peace to Squeak E. Clean.

Seems like Squeak E. Clean and Dj Zegon weren’t satisfied with just an album, now there might be a movie attached to this project (I guess it helps when Spike Jonze is your brother). Back when I first heard about this I thought it was real cool that Rza and John Frusciante did a track together. I guess now that sort of thing is expected.
