Freestyle 101 gives love to legendary West Coast hip-hopper and renown freestyler Myka Nyne (aka Mikah 9) of the equally legendary Freestyle Fellowship. Watch him do his thing! Link

Myka 9 (yes, he changed the spelling) stopped by Freestyle 101 at The Engine Room to drop science, chat about the art of the rhyme, and promote his most recent album, Citrus Sessions. This was a true freestyle in every sense of the word, as he hit on some topical subjects from news headlines (keep in mind this was taped a few months ago), name-checked some videogame consoles, and addressed some concerns with the current state of hip hop (which we had just been discussing in the lounge before rolling tape). The guy is a true artist and master of his craft. We were honored to have him.

For me Mikah 9 was like Miles Davis. He was a tall good looking dude, the girls always liked him and this dude just went on stage and there was no effort in him. He was a genius in what he did. He effected and influenced so many people in hip-hop including Mos Def, Talib Kweli, that whole scene. Years before Leaders of the New School, there are stories where Freestyle Fellowship, when they first came out and they went to New York. That whole shouting stuff, they had this ingenious way to do it and they had a backing jazz band before Digable Planets. Busta Rhymes ran up to him (Mikah 9) afterwards and said “dude what kind of style is this,” and then low and behold Leaders of the New School came out. So there’s plenty of stories like that, but that’s just like a taste of how potent that scene was at the Good Life.

When’s the last time you heard Holocaust rappin’? He had some of my favorite verses on the Bobby Digital album and on the second Killarmy album. I thought he was gone for good but I guess not. The rumour is he’s working on a full length with producers Blue Sky Black Death aka Kingston and Young God. Haven’t got much background on these cats save for the album they dropped recently on Mush. Well, then again, we forget that we wish it was all about the music, ’cause in reality it’s not. In reality, just like any other business, it’s about getting paid and not getting paid. In reality, it’s about marketing and stylized images. It’s about relationships and leverage. And the bigger the cake gets, the thicker the layers of crap that go into it. Spring has finally arrived in NYC. Around this time back in highschool I would start looking for the new mixtapes to cop. J-Love, Camilo, Double-R….ahh the good old days. Fresh music was my anti-drug. Speaking of J-Love, he just dropped number 9 in his King series. I was very surprised to see that Ghostface/El-P mix on there. But not as surprised as when I saw Masta Killa and Gza were also featured on the Prefuse album. The track doesn’t really work for me but at least it’s an attempt at something new, something fresh. The good folks at ~~Beyond Space Entertainment~~ have set a release date for the Fake Flowers LP, the solo project from our pal Ceschi (Anonymous Inc and TOCA). The album will be available 11/02/2004. The Plague Language has audio for the song Shame with a beat from Aloeight on their website (track 2 on their flash player at the bottom).

Born in the marshlands of Cricket County, West Virginia, frozen stuck to a flagpole in 1984, Ceschi Ramos composes first sad song; multi-instrumentalist and professional liar, Ceschi started writing songs at age 4, began playing violin at age 7, and rapping at age 8.

Ceschi and his brother David started the eclectic rock outfit Anonymous Inc. in 1994. In 1995, he released his first demo, which enlisted the support of budding emcees iCON the mic king and impakt. By 2000, Anonymous Inc. had worked with a variety of emcees, including circus of the shape shifters, dose and sole of anticon. and Maleko. In 2001, after finally releasing their first LP, Anonymous Inc. linked up with L.A.’s Tommy V. (Imprints/3 Eyed Cows) and Xololanxinxo (Of Mexican Descent) to form the band Toca. Ceschi and David have since worked with L.A.’s
finest emcees, including 2mex, Abstract Rude, Awol One, Busdriver, luckyiam. PSC of Living Legends, Aceyalone and Mikah9 of Freestyle Fellowship, and more.

This leads to “Fake Flowers”–a melody-drenched hip hop-esque record that owes as much to Morrissey and Brian Wilson as it does to Freestyle Fellowship and the shape shifters. Recorded between 2000 and 2004, this album jumps through a multitude of emotions and concepts, forming a nonstop voyage through the fantastic wiring that comprises Ceschi Ramos.
