It’s been over a week since the Cold Crush Brothers’ anniversary show but the feeling still lingers. It was a special night spent with the trailblazing group. Renowned artists such as Kool DJ Red Alert, Grand Wizard Theodore, DJ Scratch, Jazzy Jay, DMC and Big Daddy Kane among others took turns getting the crowd ready for the main event. It took place at the Hip-Hop Cultural Center, a museum/venue/auditorium filled to the brim with flyers, pictures and other items from the early days. If you have a chance to visit, go do it, it’s a great location dedicated to preserving the culture through curation of historical artifacts and exhibitions. The group rarely performs together so rather than do what most people expected e.g. performing all the classic routines from back in the day, the CCB’s totally flipped the script and went Unplugged (c) MTV. The night wasn’t going to be about them trying to prove they still got what it takes; it was going to be more intimate than that. It was about sharing their experiences, motivations and feelings around some of their most classic material. It was about establishing a sense of community amongst family, friends and fans. And it worked.

The Video Music Box 25th Anniversary Show was a historic event. The artists either performing or in attendance was a virtual who’s who of Hip-Hop aristocracy (partial list below). The whole concert lasted about three hours with 10-15 minute sets for each act, which meant a steady stream of classic material. If you couldn’t make it to the show and want to get a sense of what tracks were performed, just throw on your best of 80s and 90s hip-hop mixtapes.

I gotta give props to Ralph McDaniels and crew for a few things that added to the show’s success. One is keeping the event so organized. Even with the hustle and bustle of artists continuously going on and off stage, everything ran smoothly. Also, the set lengths. There was always enough entertainment throughout the night to keep the crowd involved and on their toes. Of course, major props are due for the line up. Honestly, when was the last time you heard Spoonie Gee, Schoolly D or Milk Dee rock the mic? Let alone at the same free event! Throw on the fact that none of the artists who hit the stage got paid a cent. They all did it out of love and respect for Uncle Ralph and Video Music Box. Hip-Hop unity at its finest.

Obviously, there are plenty of highlights I could run through like Ralph showing off his DJ Clark Kent designed Air Force One’s made specifically for the anniversary. Or July 18th being officially declared Video Music Box Day by Mayor Bloomberg and Governor Paterson. However, the livest part of the whole show was when the Sugar Hill Gang hit the stage to the tune of Rapper’s Delight. By now, most of us should know the back story behind Big Hank’s verse. After Wonder Mike finished up, I wondered how the crowd would react to Hank’s part of the song. The answer was that they didn’t get a chance to because Grandmaster Caz suddenly ran onto the stage and started spitting the rhymes! The icing on the cake was when Rahiem and Mele Mel of Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five joined everybody up there. Amazing.

Big ups to Ralph for being the first and putting in 25 years of hard work. And here’s to another 25+! I got video footage for most of the sets but until those are edited and uploaded onto our youtube channel, check out some pictures I snapped in between recordings (after the jump).

Here’s some info about the new Cormega album scheduled to drop in a few months. The lead single Fresh features a whole bunch of cats you probably heard of already: KRS-One, Big Daddy Kane, Grand Puba, Parrish Smith & Kool DJ Red Alert. Think that’s impressive? The producers who contributed beats include DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Havoc, Large Professor, Easy Mo Bee, Buckwild, Ayatollah and D.R. Period among others! Thanks for the look Ice. Link

The first single “Fresh” as some of ya’ll know features KRS-One, Big Daddy Kane, Grand Puba, Parish Smith of EPMD & DJ Red Alert and is crazier than I thought & one of the best off the album which includes a who’s who in legendary Hip Hop beat makers such as DJ Premier (in rare form), Pete Rock (produces the albums surprise song & best track, crazy), Havoc, Large Professor, Easy Moe B, Buckwild, Ayotollah, D R Period, Lil Fame, Nottz, Emil & others. With guest appearances by Tragedy, Havoc, Lil Fame, Marley Marl (who delivers the album intro) & more along with a possible remix ft. Baggs.

The album cover itself will definitely be a conversation piece and is in direct relation to the album title which by the way is no longer “The Inevitable” as other sites & Wikipedia have mentioned nor is it “The Streets Raised Me” which was previously confirmed to me on a past conversation with Mega. Unfortunately I can’t give the actual title for obvious reasons.

One thing that will be different about this album is the approach in it’s release to which I initially expressed my concern due to Who Am I? not receiving it’s just response. Coincidentally Mega agreed with me and had already mapped out a different marketing strategy & as he put it, “I want this album to be an event!” So we can expect to see a media blitz in the form of promoting this album from Mega making appearances on your favorite music video stations like BET, video shows & more radio stations, interviews with more online media outlets, to even an idea I gave him for an EPK (album documentary) that he thought was dope and will actually (hopefully) be doing along with other shit I suggested that may be pursued.

As far as videos, a Hip Hop legend who’s also a veteran in the tv industry in the form of video shows & directing music videos is being looked at to direct “Fresh”. I won’t mention his name just yet in case it doesn’t pan out since all that is in it’s early stages. However look for the Pete Rock produced and as yet titled track to be the second single with a video of it’s own as well. Business wise no longer will Mega’s projects (including this one) from his very own Legal Hustle Music Group be distributed by Koch as Mega is in talks with a major distributing company as we speak.

Not sure what to make of this release but it screams bootleg. And I didn’t even mention the misleading title. You don’t actually get a DVD filled with videos from these shows. Rather, you’re paying for a data disc containing mp3s of these performances. Still nice to have depending on the quality of the audio. Wonder who these cats are. Link
