Veteran freestyler Doseone has plenty of wisdom to dole out on cyphers, crutches, “getting open” and the world beyond Lil Wayne, but as we observed, the schooling is hardly one way. Dose, Jel and fellow instructor Kev seem to be getting just as much from this circle of budding Oakland MCs (aged 12-18) as they’re giving out. Be sure to watch out for 13-year-old Tyrone—he spits fire!

Here, we follow them from junk shop to SP-1200 and, finally, to debuting the breezy, psychedelic afternoon masterpiece at their regular DJ night.

Jel & Odd Nosdam – Live @ NYC Knitting Factory

I don’t have to say anything except peep the lineup. This will be the last show at the Knitting Factory before they move to Brooklyn next year. More importantly, it will be the last show for the venue’s booking agent for all these crazy Hip-Hop shows over the past two years, Peter Agoston. Looking back, the big name acts he was able bring to such an intimate spot have been very impressive. The venue has hosted shows by the likes of Nice & Smooth, Boot Camp Clik, Gza, Busta Rhymes, Q-Tip, Jeru The Damaja, Cormega, Das Efx, Brand Nubian, The Beatnuts and many others. Not to mention the Knitting Factory was where I got to see a super rare NYC performance by the one and only Schoolly D! Big ups to Peter for holding it down over there. With its whispered intro and backwards hum, it might be hard to believe that the original “Interoceans II (Overturning)” is even more sleepy. But the track, by jazz/noise improvisers Chris Schlarb and drummer Tom Steck, finds its determined groove late in its 12 minutes. The Jel remix doesn’t have that kind of time: Awol One immediately starts with the chorus (“You built yourself a monster/Out of spare parts/And all kinds of pig hearts”) over the track’s lumbering beat and lapping ocean waves. The stereo-panned drumbeat and backwards synth line make the song a little queasy and uncomfortable, simmering under Awol’s accusations. As Awol One’s raspy and exhausted, Serengeti’s unrelenting and quick. Serengeti’s unrelenting delivery balances out Awol’s raspy talk-rap. He’s got a dozen similes for each of Awol’s metaphors, though his are inscrutable and scattershot while Awol One stays focused on an ex. Serengeti’s cut-up couplets take Awol’s chorus as a guiding principle—he sews his verse together out of spare lines, though what he builds isn’t quite as monstrous as you hope. – JESSICA SUAREZ
