It’s been over a week since the Cold Crush Brothers’ anniversary show but the feeling still lingers. It was a special night spent with the trailblazing group. Renowned artists such as Kool DJ Red Alert, Grand Wizard Theodore, DJ Scratch, Jazzy Jay, DMC and Big Daddy Kane among others took turns getting the crowd ready for the main event. It took place at the Hip-Hop Cultural Center, a museum/venue/auditorium filled to the brim with flyers, pictures and other items from the early days. If you have a chance to visit, go do it, it’s a great location dedicated to preserving the culture through curation of historical artifacts and exhibitions. The group rarely performs together so rather than do what most people expected e.g. performing all the classic routines from back in the day, the CCB’s totally flipped the script and went Unplugged (c) MTV. The night wasn’t going to be about them trying to prove they still got what it takes; it was going to be more intimate than that. It was about sharing their experiences, motivations and feelings around some of their most classic material. It was about establishing a sense of community amongst family, friends and fans. And it worked.

Recorded at the free Big Daddy Kane show last night in Brooklyn. He killed it as usual but Greg Nice proved once again to be one of the liveliest acts I’ve ever seen on stage. How old is this dude again? Cause you can’t tell when he’s on stage and, in this case, amongst the crowd doing his thing.

For good measure, here’s Kane ending his set with a dope acapella and some of his signature classics, culminating in his famous dance routine to Warm It Up, Kane. Now, how old is THIS dude? Apparently, not old enough to stop doing splits on stage. Great show.

Panel discussion went down last night before the KRS-One show at SOBs. From the looks of the picture above, Hip-Hop pioneers everywhere. Can you name all the people in that photo? Peace to Joe Conzo for the pic.

We are putting on notices The BETs, VH1s, Radio Stations, Corporate Giants and whoever keeps raping the Culture that WE are UNITED and coming after you! BIG shout outs go out to The Federation, KRS ONE and The Temple of Hip Hop and ALL The Pioneers that came out tonight.

The second tribute show dedicated to the memory of Roc Raida went down a few months back and was organized by Lord Finesse. Performers and appearances by the likes of Kool Herc, Jazzy Jay, Large Professor, Grand Puba, Sadat X, A.G., Immortal Technique, Neek The Exotic, O.C. and The Beatnuts. Founding member of the original Jazzy 5 MCs, Leon Heyward was known as M.C. Sundance. His heroic acts immediately after the terrorist attacks on September 11th were commemorated at this year’s memorial ceremony. Unfortunately he passed away last year due to complications that arose from his exposure to the contaminated dust and smoke.

Circa ’91 he put out a record called “America’s Gonna Fall”, produced by Jazzy Jay. Ten years later a piece of America did fall.

Not sure what to make of this release but it screams bootleg. And I didn’t even mention the misleading title. You don’t actually get a DVD filled with videos from these shows. Rather, you’re paying for a data disc containing mp3s of these performances. Still nice to have depending on the quality of the audio. Wonder who these cats are. Link
