Just like he says, he made it to the top of the food chain, but now what? The first “missile” from his station at the Roc is two tepid verses over generic sounds about how he’s gonna bring it? How he’s gonna change shit? Really? Shouldn’t this have been a composition where, ahem, he brings it? Shouldn’t he, or his producer, maybe have spent more than a few hours arranging the chorus so it didn’t sound forced? Speaking of, the most meaningful thing about this track, for me anyway, is Prodigy’s participation. How ill is it that P is where he is again? Right there at the top, with one of Jay Z’s artists no less, hopefully getting laced and definitely staying true to himself and his path.

All this is not to say that Jay didn’t rip it, cause he did. He did his thing, referencing political figures, expressing his devotion to the music, his recognition of his rhyming heroes. He’s a talented MC who fortunately, or unfortunately, built a reportoire as the second coming. But at what point does that second coming occur and what are we supposed to get from it? I know heads will think its unrelated but how meaningful is this track, or the next one, in the face of what’s happening in the streets? I would have thought Liberty Park was right where Electronica’s nomadic ass would be. Instead we have Kanye, taking a break from shopping with Jay-z and Beyonce. So yeah, you rap well sir. But can you weave full songs? What Duty is it that you’re invoking? What War? I hope its not the video game.

Though we recognize the complexities of the system we find ourselves trapped in, this form of modern patronage still rubs us the wrong way. It reaks of inauthenticity, dependency and coercion. With regard to Jay Electronica, the issue isn’t the fact that he is discussing sex that involves erotic asphyxiation, or grabbing or smacking. Get it how you live. Sex on mutually agreed upon terms between two adults is what the streets want.

The issue is that when he asks “Do All Women Like Being Choked” question over and over again at different concerts, along with making statements like “You know what that means there’s a lot of women in Seattle getting choked against they will..[crowd laughter] “ he is contributing to an environment that renders sexual violence as normal, an environment that already blames women for being sexually assaulted, a sexual ecosystem where 60% of sexual assaults are not reported to police, a sexual ecosystem where every 2 minutes someone is sexual assaulted.

The issue is the silencing the woman in this video (@3:25 sec ) who tells him “It’s not funny.” He responds saying “We know its not funny. Relax” and then commands the crowd to repeat after him. Peace to her for speaking up. She is a #bravebear.
