In March of 2003, recently deceased Senator Byrd delivered a speech on the floor of the US Senate, questioning the long term effects of the proliferation of War in Iraq to the international perception of the United States:

Excerpt: “…But, today I weep for my country. I have watched the events of recent months with a heavy, heavy heart. No more is the image of America one of strong, yet benevolent peacekeeper. The image of America has changed. Around the globe, our friends mistrust us, our word is disputed, our intentions are questioned.

Instead of reasoning with those with whom we disagree, we demand obedience or threaten recrimination. Instead of isolating Saddam Hussein, we seem to have isolated ourselves. We proclaim a new doctrine of preemption which is understood by few and feared by many. We say that the United States has the right to turn its firepower on any corner of the globe which might be suspect in the war on terrorism. We assert that right without the sanction of any international body. As a result, the world has become a much more dangerous place.

We flaunt our superpower status with arrogance. We treat UN Security Council members like ingrates who offend our princely dignity by lifting their heads from the carpet. Valuable alliances are split.

After war has ended, the United States will have to rebuild much more than the country of Iraq. We will have to rebuild America’s image around the globe.”

Over a funky Batsauce beat balanced appropriately with a bassline that evokes a sense of weightiness and a break that forces you to relax and ease your embrace of hope, Dillon and Chop take turns discussing the Apple & Pie image of America and relatively quickly – one verse each – offer criticism instead of attempting to vilify like so many of their peers. I would have liked to have heard more from each on this topic but considering the sensitivity and complexity of the issues they touch on, perhaps it was best kept short.

America… as in the United States of America. What does it conjure up for you? There’s something about “Baseball and Apple Pie” that doesn’t quite ring true anymore – what say you?

The other day someone asked me why I let my son watch the children’s program Yo Gabba Gabba! I responded that it’s the only show that captivates him and that I can also tolerate. I started to go into the musicality of the segments and then was cut off to complaints of low production value, being able to see the zippers on the costumes and how the “monsters” don’t even move their lips. What struck me though is that, that’s actually another reason why I appreciate the show. It’s nice to have to employ one’s imagination. And especially for my son who I hope learns a thing or two about conjuring images and combining different elements and implied meanings to form a whole picture. Hyper-reality is cool too (ask people vying for the Hurt Locker to win Best Picture), but that’s not the end all of creative production.

So yeah, along those lines, here’s a great amateur video covering four tracks from Dillon’s “Cupid’s Revenge: The Ain’t Shit Suite EP”. I’ll take this over a wannabe Hype Williams every time. Oh yeah, and the productions bumps as well.

Super Bonus: Part 4 of Dillon’s excursion to Honduras

here we leave the private island of “Little Cay” to the captiol city, Progresso. This is where Cosmo and Yappa live, and we go to check out the projects they’re working on via their foundation “Students Helping Honduras.” First we go to “Siete de Abril,” a squatter village whose community S.H.H. is working with. From there we go to “Sunshineville,” a brand new 70 home village that people from Siete de Abril are building themselves from the ground up. Truly inspiring. Our last stop takes us to “Coprame” – the orphanage where S.H.H. spends a chunk of its time with the 50 plus kids of all ages. We finish up our trip with a home cooked feast at “La Cascada” – international Dillon keeps wrecking ALL kitchens. Know that. Of course its the all-star soundtrack provided by none other than Willie Evans Jr, P. Locke, Supa Dave West, and Anthony Accurate. Holla Bill$
