In this here video Buck 65 discusses the collabo effort with Nick Thorburn for the song Gee Whiz, from his album 20 Odd Years. He also explains why he sometimes likes to go by The Marquis de Sade. Listening to his new record makes me feel juvenile, the song writing and sounds are so damn mature and Worldly. At times I feel like a spoiled rap kid, wishing he would just lay down some drums and bars. But I can also appreciate him forcing my ears to learn.

Buck 65 – Highway 101 / unreleased

I ripped this off cassette and put it up for a friend this morning, thought cats around here might like to hear it. It’s a mixed tape that Buck (f/k/a DJ Critical, Jesus Murphy) as a prize for donating a certain amount to CKDU 97.5 during his show. He used to make these one-offs every year for that. I’m putting the year at 1999 (I thought it was 98 when I named the files, I guess) because the Z-Trip remix of “Planets Ain’t Aligned” is on there. Otherwise the newest track I remember being on it is “Scapegoat” by Atmosphere. Apart from those two, it’s largely scratch-heavy hardcore rap from the mid-to-late 80s.

My career can be divided rather neatly along the edges of the decades. I fiddled around a little – secretly – in the 80′s, but I got started in 1990. The ’90′s were my indie years. They were my Halifax years.

Then 2000 rolled around, I made Square and signed a record deal. So the aughts were the decade I took it to another level, professionally. And I started to have some important musical/creative breakthroughs right at the same time.

The last decade has been a very interesting and weird and fun and depressing and exciting one for me. Here are a few recollections…
