On learning that Yauch had passed away, I walked around Brooklyn assuming every woman, egg man, child, and pet to be thinking the same thing: I wondered which track their brains were playing. (“High Plains Drifter” over here—I always liked the way Yauch said radar detector.) Over the weekend, I read every eulogy/tribute/famous-rapper tweet possible, because I like it when rappers quote rappers and turn into fans. (Traditionally, this profession doesn’t encourage you to jock anyone but yourself.) In this grief, those of us who grew up with hip-hop needed that sort of thing. I also found solace in seeing the words penis balloon and Buddhism sharing the same obituary.

Unlike a lot of vintage performance footage getting passed around, this one has good audio and, the Don – 0:00 Posse In Effect –> 2:25 Interview –> 5:09 Brass Monkey. Peace to DJ Hurricane, who recently spoke out against the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame decision that he not be included in the induction.

Though the idea here is that dads want some Beastie vinyl for father’s day I just enjoyed the imagery of his wife and children being fed freshly cooked records. On the one hand I hope my kids one day get a kick out of my collection but on the other I hope I don’t turn into the old griper who stuffs my preferences down their throats thereby assuring their rebellion. Kind of like what happened to Tyler and the odd future base.

As a retaliatory stance the Beastie Boys decided to stream the whole album once they caught wind that the clean version had leaked. Drums are sounding mighty full on first listen. Diggin the breakdown in the middle of this track, wonder if Mix Master Mike handled the scratches.
