Though the idea here is that dads want some Beastie vinyl for father’s day I just enjoyed the imagery of his wife and children being fed freshly cooked records. On the one hand I hope my kids one day get a kick out of my collection but on the other I hope I don’t turn into the old griper who stuffs my preferences down their throats thereby assuring their rebellion. Kind of like what happened to Tyler and the odd future base.

As a retaliatory stance the Beastie Boys decided to stream the whole album once they caught wind that the clean version had leaked. Drums are sounding mighty full on first listen. Diggin the breakdown in the middle of this track, wonder if Mix Master Mike handled the scratches.

Indie hip-hop duo the Cool Kids doesn’t have an album out, but they’ve got a few songs on MySpace, a video blowing up YouTube, and enough hype to launch the tour that brought them to Studio B last night. The cool kids in the audience, though, were nonplussed. Understandably — Chuck and Mikey’s vocals were largely undecipherable, and the beats they brought much darker and less varied than what you’ll hear online. By show’s end, the crowd had thinned considerably. They missed the best part: The Kids wrapped things up with “One, Two,” declaring themselves “the new black version of the Beastie Boys” over the backdrop of the Beastie track “Root Down.” We have to wonder — who will declare themselves the new white version of the Cool Kids?

Format: Tell me about your book Definition. I’m curious because it sounds like with the book you’re not taking the conventional, graffiti writer book approach at all. It seems like it’s a very contemporary book.

Adams: It’s called Definition the Art and Design of Hip Hop. The idea is that over the last 20, 25 years, basically since the birth of hip-hop, there’s amazing talent emerging and a lot of these are people of colour. A lot of them are Asian, or middle eastern, basically, not white. There’s all these amazing talent that are coming up and nobody is really giving their work a voice. Everybody talks about graffiti and everything that happened in the ‘80’s but in my opinion that story has already been told, over and over again. Nobody is telling the story of the young kid that was inspired by Fear of a Black Planet (Public Enemy) or License to Ill (Beastie Boys) and decided that they wanted to become a graphic designer. So my concept was to try to incorporate graffiti and the evolution of graffiti and street art and show that people like Shephard Fairey or the disciples of Keith Haring, just basically to show the thread.
