I also wonder if people will reconsider their perspective on this issue, considering the recent noise surrounding Kool Herc’s healthcare problems, which happened to be one of the main points KRS was discussing during his explanation of Afrika Bambaataa’s decision.

KRS-One touches upon issues similar to the ones he expressed at the Hip-Hop Museum inaugural event. Tell ‘em Teacha!

“Before we can even discuss an institution, let me discuss your welfare first. Have you eaten today? Have you showered today icon? Are you getting your money like you’re supposed to icon? Do you have legal representation? What about health insurance? Before we can even discuss a museum, a college, a hall of fame? While our icons are dying before our faces? This is what the argument is. Only Hip-Hop can build Hip-Hop’s museum. And this is not about icons. If you really feel Hip-Hop in your heart, you are Hip-Hop. But if you really feel Hip-Hop in your heart, then you don’t get your Hip-Hop from a CD. You walk up on Kool Herc and you say “Thank You” and out of your own love, reach in your pocket and hand him something. Honor those who created this whole thing. There has to be a higher level of respect for Flash, Bam and Herc.”

Connecting the dots, the history of the energy. (pt 2-4 after the jump). Peace to the teacher Popmaster Fabel, who also gave an insightful lecture at the Museum of the City earlier this month.

The notorious Black Spades was once the largest and most feared gang in New York City. Hailing from the Bronx, the Spades had as their warlord, Hip Hop pioneer Afrika Bambaataa. They were the precursors to Hip Hop.. We caught up with many of the members including original leader Bam Bam who gave Bambaataa his name. We spoke with Hip Hop legend Popmaster Fabel who is finishing up a documentary on early gang culture called ‘The Apache line’.

We also hear from Karate Charlie who was the President of the Ghetto Brothers which was another large Street Orginazation highlighted in Jeff Chang’s book ‘Cant Stop Wont Stop’..

Went down at the Lecture on Urban Latino Hip-Hop in NYC tonight. Here are a few snapshots of the legendary panel consisting of Joe Conzo, Crazy Legs and Popmaster Fabel. And these are just the people on stage! Audience members included Afrika Bambaataa, Grand Wizard Theodore, G-Bo The Pro, Tony Tone, Ernie Paniccioli and more. Great night.

Probably nothing new here for most of the heads visiting this site. But still. via old to the new

Cornell Library’s Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections was recently gifted a large collection of early hip-hop memorabilia from avid music collector, Johan Kugelberg. You can get a peek on the official website but you might also consider attending the inaugral conference, which will include a roundtable and performances from the likes of Afrika Bambaataa, Jeff Chang, Joe Conzo and others. It will be taking place from October 31st to November 1st. You can also listen to an interview with Kugelberg here.

The collection includes nearly one thousand sound recordings, the photographic archive of Bronx photographer Joe Conzo, Jr., textile art, books and magazines, and a collection of more than five hundred original flyers designed by Buddy Esquire and others.

The collection aims to document the origins of hip hop as culture and community, and its influence on the history of music, art, performance, and activism in America during the final third of the 20th century and beyond. Building upon the Division’s substantial collections documenting 19th and 20th century American life, the hip hop archive provides original research materials for students and scholars in the fields of music, American studies, urban studies, theater, film & dance, art history, African American studies, government, literature, and history.
