Scarface Pretty Tony: A Health Reform Love Story by Kenzo Digital Whether you are for health care reform or not, one thing remains clear: the American public simply does not know enough about the legislation. As concerned citizens, our goal is simple, to raise awareness and create a dialogue. As the debate on health care reform continues to evolve, we feel that it is more important than ever to be aware of the issues and facts at hand. We are not taking a particular stance on health care reform. Rather we seek to inspire debate using satire and absurdity to re-frame the ongoing health care discussion. The following is a spoof movie trailer that explores the outlandish nature of the ongoing myth that illegal immigrants will receive free health care.

That’s number 20/20 of “pretty important things” Noah Callahan, Editor in chief of Complex magazine, has learned over the years. For the record, I dislike lists. Especially year end lists and more so click through Complex lists. Although that recent Boo-yah Tribe one was pretty legit. That aside, there are some niche nuggets here for check seeking writers and corporate politickers, although none too original. I especially liked this one: “4) If you’re gonna shit on someone’s rhyme, you should try, at least once, to sit down and write a 16. It’s hard. Don’t get me wrong, everyone is entitled to their opinion as a listener and consumer, but a little respect for the difficulty of the process may inform how you express your dissatisfaction.” This would have come in handy to anyone using “fail miserably” to describe Slick Rick’s rhymes.

I can’t help but like his music. I’ve tried not to. There’s something about his lyrics, err, language. Yeah his production and voice too but the way he carries his words and the meaning he applies to them. Maybe Socrates was on to something when he suggested that words lose their meaning when written down. Something tells me that if R. Kelly didn’t grow up barely reading and writing he’d be a lot less interesting to interpret. Who else could say something like “…girl, there’s something church about you…” (lyrics from “Religious”, the second single from his “Untitled” album) and make it sound pious and erotic at the same time? Kellz is reading & comprehension challenged but that doesn’t mean his emoshins don’t run deep and seek release (no! no pee jokes, grow up).

But then when they comeback, suddenly they’re dressing like the kids, getting whatever guest producers they think are hot today and wind up chasing the trends.

Pow Wow: There you go. That’s the key to it right there, brother. That’s the fuckin’ key; you opened Pandora’s Box, man. That’s the key to it, John: come out and be your fuckin’ self. Be like when you was hungry in your fuckin’ house, sittin’ at your kitchen table, in your bedroom, or while you’re on the toilet takin’ a shit, thinkin’ about what the fuck I’ma say at this party Friday that’s not gonna sound like Melle Mel or Kidd Creole or Rahiem or KK Rockwell or nobody.

TWU: Right old ways of marketing records don’t seem to be working, which is worrying for the independent artists. When you talk about the endangered lyricist, is that what you are referring to?

RK: I think it’s deeper than that. Jay-Z has put himself pretty much in a position to become the first rap billionaire but I’m talking about the Ras Kass, people that maybe for whatever reason aren’t. Nas, he put himself in a position to at least be heard by the world and whatever happens then after that is about what politics does. I don’t buy a Jay-Z album, not because I don’t like Jay-Z but because Talib Kweli may need that record sale more. 50 Cent is still on his way to being a billionaire whether he sells one copy or a million in first week. So, I probably won’t buy a 50 Cent album, not because I don’t like his music, it’s just that there’s somebody that needs it more. I want to support Hip-Hop and make it better so I may have to buy a Common album, as opposed to buying an Eminem album. That’s what the ‘endangered lyricist’ is about, it’s about keeping the balance. No bees, no pollination, no trees, no oxygen, you know what I’m saying? I remember going to the studio when I was working on Goldyn Child and Nas came in like the day he dropped ‘Ether’ and was like ‘Goldyn Child didn’t come out. I went to the fucking record store and that shit wasn’t out.’ I was just like wow he gave a fuck! Nas is literally having a career-changing thing with ‘Ether,’ wakes up and thinks Ras Kass’ album’s coming out. We give a fuck and we support each other.
