He did not bomb. Some of y’all are tripping for real. Give a brother a chance… maybe a smaller club next time he’s in town. Some rappers I know have been saying that the internet is hurting hip-hop, well they’re right.
One thing is to exercise the right to write about things (in the world) from our perspective. To pulverize the space saying dude bombed is another… Jay lived in the streets for a while, he’s not at all accustomed to the lifestyle he’s getting into. Don’t be mad at Erykah, or Just or Nasir for this… the man of the hour seems to be making his own decisions.

Two terms for y’all to study: ARTIST DEVELOPMENT and ARTISTIC ENLIGHTENMENT.

I’m pretty confident that he wouldve killed if the levels were right (you could barely hear him when he did “eternal sunshine”) and if he didn’t show up over an hour and a half after the supposed start time

Thank you for citing my review of the show. I appreciate that you’ve properly credited my photo as well.

I hadn’t known Jay Electronica was so new to performing, but it certainly showed. There is a reason most artists suffer through tiny clubs and small crowds for years before they achieve success – it teaches them how to perform and earn the respect of the crowd. Times Square is not a good place to start.

Gyeah: That’s not what I was getting at. Like I said, I really don’t think his performance was weak. If it was I would call it. But, I think it was DECENT. Due to the fact that this guy has never performed in front of a large NYC crowd. So, I wasn’t expecting a dunk….but like I said earlier…I wouldn’t call it an “air ball” either. And I’m not saying having Blaze & Badu on stage makes up for his mediocre performance. Not at all….I could care less if they were there or not. I mentioned their names because they obviously think this dude is dope enough to make an appearance because he’s basically nobody right now. And I think that’s cool. Peace….

Coolquan: How can you possibly defend an artist’s performance that was obviously an air ball by the celebrity of those who lent their time to make a cameo or spin the instros? Seriously? “Nas was gonna come thru” makes it okay that this overhyped artist has zero mic control and no sense of tailoring a set when supporting (as opposed to showcasing to your OWN fans) or even reading a crowd.

Ditto to the review and the comment above. The crowd wasn’t ready for Jay and I was not surprised. I don’t think the average hip-hop fan is ready for an MC who incorporates dialogue from Willy Wonka into their rhymes. The sound was pretty atrocious and Jay should have really gone in to get the audience to a point where they would have listened to his story (which Electronica fans probably wanted to hear. Myself included). An appearance from Nas would not have been the worst thing. Overall, I enjoyed hearing his music live (fucked up mic or not) and his enthusiasm was surprising and refreshing, just like his rhymes. The Obama mask was also cool. Mind detects mind and mind detects matter. The audience’s reception of Electronica is not of much consequence.

that’s a pretty accurate review. but i wouldn’t say it was disappointing. we all know that it is hard for pretty much any “opening act” to keep the attention of the audience. especially in nyc. most people tend to be restless and are looking for the “headline” artist to begin. my honest opinion, i think jay did a decent job for his first performance in nyc. i mean, he’s virtually unknown and he had just blaze dj’ing his set and an appearance by erykah badu. he also mentioned that nas had planned to make it but, ran into some problems at the last minute. those are three well established people who seem to support this dude. he had energy, and a dope visual on the projector. he got the occasional “oooooh” & “aaahhhh” that a lyricist wants to hear. i think just was telling him to kill the story telling, and go in. i agree. once people get familiar with his music, they’ll begin to want to hear those stories he attempted to tell. peace…..
